How To attach an SIR handguard

One of the Moderators suggested it would be a
good idea if I post the "How to Instructions" for installing a S.I.R.
Grip as a separate post, so here it is...
Well here are pics and instructions to do it...
First,
have to cut off handle. I used a hack saw to do this. Don't worry too
much, not to many ways to screw this up, don't have to be perfect. If
you do screw it up, can always get new body halves from
http://www.tippmannparts.com.When done, will have a large one inch hole towards back of gun, that is
normal and don't have to worry about it. You also going to have what
looks like the beginnings of a weaver rail without the notches. Using a
dremel, I cut notches into this part, to become a weaver rail. Some
people buy after market rails, and drill and tap holes to mount it
(that is definitely quicker and easier). I was afraid it wouldn't be a
strong enough mount(afraid screws would get ripped out or stripped
out), so made top into a weaver rail.
Here is pic of notches next to a ruler...
The
rail is also a little wider than a standard weaver rail, so you going
to need to use a dremel to thin it out. This is were you have to be
patient, it is tedious work. Once done, it is done, so I feel it is
worth the effort.
Now the SIR grip. You going to have to cut
notches in it to allow for the feed neck latch arm to lock onto gun.
You can pretty much eye ball this, doesn't have to be perfect.
Next pic is of the notches for the feed latch and the 3 notches for mounting screws of SIR Grip...
Now for rear of the mount. I said there will be a rather big hole. Well, this where you use a weaver rail extension to cover it.
Again, cut notches and thin out the rail. This pic is where I put the notches for my particular rail extender.
It may vary depending on which one you get...
My rail extension was purchased form
http://www.bushmaster.com several years ago for about $30 with shipping.
Apparently they don't carry them any more...
I found this one on-line, but a bit pricey.
On this web site...
http://yankeehillmachine.com/store/product260.htmlI am sure if you look, you can get a better price.
You going to need one 5 inches long...
Once mounted, can't even see hole...
Last,
but not least, the cyclone feed. You going to have to shape the
mounting piece into more of a triangle shape to fit (if using a 98
Cyclone), Unless you using the newer ones meant for an Alpha Black.
Either way, you going to have to thin out the top part so it will slide
under the SIR Grip and lock into place.
once done, gun should look like this...
Of course mine is painted CAMMO, and added after market HK 416 sights.
The
most work is going to be thinning out the rail and cutting the notches
into it. In theory, simple idea to do. Take your time and go slow. It
is fairly soft metal, so shouldn't take too long. I was able to do
everything in about 2.5 to 3 hours, and at home not in a fancy metal
shop (some people have access to a metal shop, I wish I did, probably
come out neater). And of course, you going to need a dremel tool
(available from any good hardware store, but cheaper on-line). It is
the most handy tool I've owned, so worth the money to get it
