PostSubject: Shooting a full auto AR today   Shooting a full auto AR today EmptyMon Nov 11, 2013 12:29 am

I went to the range today for a class and one of the guys there was Jessie James with Spikes Tactical. I was priginally planning to borrow my friends AR as we shot since mine is still being built. Jessie offered to let me use one of his guns. I used a Spikes Lower and Adams Arms Piston SBR upper (10 1/2") with a Knight's suppressor for the 1st 2 stages and a Spikes SBR with 8" barrel for the last close quaters stage. Both guns were a blast to shoot, and Spikes really impressed me with there quality.

Here's a pic of my with the 1st SBR and can.

And yes, for the eagle eyed among you, I am wearing my KCK patch on my arm.

once we finished for the day, Jessie let anyone who wanted to shoot his full auto SBR. God I missed that smell

And here is a video of me shooting the FA SBR

Nice! I have yet to shoot a FA version.

TX allows suppressors for hunting now, though. I'm planning on building a suppressed, short barreled AR in 300 BLK. Of course, I have to save up for a pair of tax stamps first!

Why go SBR for hunting? SBR's are mostly usefull for CQB, and are not very good for longer range shooting. You'd be really limiting your range.

I'll be reloading to subsonic speeds for use with a suppressor. There's a lot of pre-existing data for reloading these using 300 AAC out a 12.5" barrel using 208-225 gr bullets. The 12.5 makes it very manueverable in heavy brush. This would not be for open-terrain, distance type hunting, although it would be fun to take one up to AZ and do some prarie dog hunting at various distances to see how it performs. This will most likely be hogs in hay fields and around stock tanks.

That makes more sense then. Were I hunt the average range is about 150 meters, but there are some rare occasions were you'll get a 500 meter shot every once in a while. Brush is just to thick here. But I like being able to take that longer shot when it comes up. Most hunters won't shoot past 200 because they don't think they can hit. I know I can hit out to 600 meters with my rifle.

It's one of the reasons I usually get more deer than most of my hunting buddies, even though they are in the woods 3 or 4 times more often than me. The deer know you won't shoot that far so if they see you they just look at you and then ignore you.

Cool, I love distance shooting. My wife's family has some property out in North AZ where we do coyote hunting. Most of what I do now is central TX brush deer/hogs and East TX forest/fields for hogs with archery, blackpowder and AR-based platform rifles.

I have a Win Mod 70 in 300 WM for my current distance shooter, and am building a rifle that the barrels will switch out between 300, 338 and 458 win mags as well. I used to hunt down in South TX where most shots were 200-400 yards. Longest I ever took was ~600. Always interesting being able to easily distinguish muzzle blast from impact on animal on the long shots.

Did the piston upper make a noticeable difference while shooting (felt recoil, etc)? I'll have my new lower finished this week and wil be dropping a 16" upper I built up from a GMR M4 barrel and a variety of small parts. I was considering switching out to a piston system. I know they run cleaner and I think a piston system would be more reliable (although I've never had a failure to cycle on my colt). Never actually shot one, though.

There wasn't any more or less felt recoil. It was just a different recoil impulse. Piston uppers aren't more reliable until you get down to shorter than carbine length gas systems. And if you are running a suppressor, they aren't any cleaner due to all the blowback you get.

Piston systems are better for high rates of sustained fire. Think combat for long periods of time were the rifle can overheat. They also work well on really short barrels. Other than that, I see no advantage to piston over DI systems. I have put 1,000's of rounds through M16's, and cannot ever remeber seeing issues other than using blanks with blank firing adaptors. And even then it was user error for not lubing the bolt correctly.

Most issues I see shooting competitions, it's either magazine related or the user tweaking to much to get a softer shot. I also sometimes see newer shooters who just don't know how to maintain there rifles yet. I gave my frinds a little class on maintanence of an AR when we 1st started shooting AR's together. Most of my shooting buddies had never even held an AR before they bought one.

Hah! I have to admit...I bought my first one back in 1989. It was "tacticooool" and I wanted it. I had been looking at them for years at gunshows with my father growing up. I wasn't sure what I was going to do with one, but I knew I needed it.Very Happy  I've dumped quite a bit of rounds out of it. The only issues were with some crappy reloads I bought back in 1990. 3 out of 5 ruptured case necks....but it still fired/cycled every one.

Before that, an M1 carbine and a Ruger 10/22 were my sole possessions. The AR was definite learning experience. I needed someone like you around when I first got it. There were a lot more pieces than what I was used to!

Now I'm a tweaker. I just can leave something alone. If it's made of metal and goes bang I feel a calling to jack with it to see if I can get just a wee bit more out of it. Building firearms from scratch I find myself spending hours just working on a single angle on a feed ramp, or a spring compression ratio/length to adjust cycling and recoil aspects. That's why I love the AR...it's like accessorizing for gun nuts. :) So many different looks just a couple push pins away.

Kind of like my paintball obsession. I can't just buy a marker and be happy. Noooooo, gotta spend 10 hours on a single handguard assembly...and now I'll be changing barrels again anyway.

I was a huge AR tinkerer when I got my 1st one years ago. But since then I know what I like in one, and like to keep it simple, cause simple works.

Culling some does last year. My new upper on an older colt lower. 85-90 yards predawn light, shot in the forehead. Very Happy  This thanksgiving I plan on having the whole rifle done. I've settled on this for the basic system I like: 6 position stock, forward grip, simple red dot. Only other thing I'd like is a long throw flashlight with pressure switch for night hunting varmints.

Hey Kragaxe, where in Northern Az is your wife's family's property at? I used to live in Kingman and Holbrook. Know the areas pretty well. Some decent varmint hunting there.

I don't remember the actual closest town. Just south of Rt 66. South of the Grand Canyon Caverns and they are buried back in the boonies. 4WD in/out only due to rocks and washouts. Thousands of prarie dogs taking over the areas just north along Rt 66. Only a matter of time until they invade their property! Coyotes are abundant and usually covered in mange making the local ranchers concerned. Elk and antelope during the winter months also. Pretty neat place, but a bit of a trip from Houston, TX!

We drive out to Las Vegas (Boulder City actually) for Christmas every other year and usually stay out there for a few days on the way out.
