PostSubject: polished down...what next?   Mon Aug 12, 2013 2:48 am

Been on the forums two days and y'all already have me tearing my Ab down and polishing things up. Hah!

I figured it's about time a pull it all apart and really start looking at how it works, anyway. I polished it down starting with 800 grit wet/dry silicon carbide paper with WD40, followed by some 2500 grit cloth. Pretty dang smooth now! It really made a noticeable difference as well just feeling the ation without air. I was surprised how rough the texture was to start. I'm looking forward to shooting it tomorrow.

Unless something breaks, I really don't plan on doing anything else to the internals. The only thing I had considered was switching out the head to a metal one. That just seemed like an high stress part to be made from plastic. I had seen a few references on the forums to doing this. Is this a recommended change?

Aside from that, I just want to switch to a cyclone hopper and that will probably be it. Maybe an E-trigger at some point, but probably not. I have yet to really need to fire faster than what my finger can do.

I would stick with the plastic part, or upgrade to a Delrin bolt with an internal Oring like the BOranged bolt. The metal bolts can cause issues at times. The plastic bolt will wear out eventually, but you likely will never shoot that much. I bought a used Tippmann 98C for the wife from a paintball field. It had been beat to crap, but I got it for $20. I changed out the Orings and it has worked for 5 years since then without a single iossue.

Hmm....I thought I had made a post, but it seemed to not have posted.

Well, here's some pics of the process. The first pic is everything stripped down. It looks smooth until you rub a finger on it. I can see how that would degrade O-rings pretty quick as the rub along it!

The second pic is the parts polished up. They are slick as snot now and things slide real easy. I polished everywhere there was contact. Both the front section as well as the rear bolt and the channel where the connection bar goes.

The last pic is everything back together. I'll be making a new front end, so I left that off. I accidentally left out the spring clip for the hopper catch. That took me a while to figure out how that went back in! This was  a good learning experience to really look over the little parts and see how they all interact as opposed to just wiping and oiling.

I agree with Tuf on the sticking with a plastic bolt. If you want one that is better performing I think David19969 espouses the Rufus Wikked something or other bolt. Everybody around here has their own specific brand they like really. Me personally I'll be getting a new bolt sometime in the near future, but when I get that, I'm gonna break everything down and fully polish the internals.

If you're looking for a new forend that you can customize with your own rail setup, check the stuff I have linked below

http://www.paintball-discounters.com/i/957/custom-products-tactical-slotted-hand-shroud.htm - The shroud itself.

http://www.paintball-discounters.com/i/958/custom-products-tactical-hand-shroud-thread-adapter.htm - The adapter that helps it snug onto the barrel.

Yeah it's $28 bucks but that's actually somewhat better than most of the shrouds you're gonna find out there, and you'd be able to set it up how you like, all you do is buy and bolt on rails and you're good to go.

I also recommend Paintball Discounters because if you call in during business hours their staff is very knowledgeable and are a team of dedicated paintball players. And the prices on a lot of their stuff is pretty good. I just got a refurbished 48/3000 HPA tank for $32. And if you and your son are looking to get tac vests or anything like that, prices for that stuff aren't bad either.

Well, it's a lot smoother operating. These balls seemed to be curving more than usual, but had a more consistent velocity. I noticed afterwards that the barrel had some grime in it. I'll have to clean it and redo the test. I'll put some sights back on it and shoot off a benchrest to see how much is the gun...and how much is the shooter!

This was in the backyard, the full length of our house, plus the garage, plus another 8-10 feet. I paced it off at 35 paces at ~2-2.5 feet per pace. So 80 feet or so. About the farthest I shoot in our games. Most of my shots are around 50-60 feet...but it's nice to know what your gun does out farther. These seemed to fly great until halfway past the garage (60-65 feet). Then they were curving randomly. I'll do the A5 tomorrow and see what it does.

as far as a new shroud,.. if your still looking,.. Tippmannparts.com has the Salvo front shroud which is all rails and fits the AB nicely.

As far as the curving goes, it may be your paint, I have had some that curved wildly after about 60 feet or so.
A tip for the hopper spring, I put mine in place and then put a drop of super glue to hold it in, then after it dries I put everything back together, saves you from learning mew curse words as you are on your hands and knees looking for the spring.

Well, I just ordered a 10" J&J ceramic barrel for $19. I didn't know they made a 10"...all I ever see is the 12 and 14".

I'll repeat the test above with a few different paints and see what works best. I have Draxxus Midnight, Draxxus from AcademySports (orange/red shell), Xtreme from Sports Authority, and field paint from Paintball Zone South (Houston, TX).

If the barrel works well, I'll grab one for the A5 as well.

One suggestion for you as well is a cyclone for your alpha, if you have an A5 you know how nice they are.

Already have it in my amazon.com cart.

I'll be getting a project bonus next week that I can hopefully divert some funds from without my wife having a heart attack. I just got a speech over the barrel...and that was only $22 after shipping!
