PostSubject: Ghetto Tac Cap build - no cyclone   Wed Aug 07, 2013 9:29 pm

Hi all,

I don't have a cyclone feeder, and if i understand correctly, the cyclone is a pre-requisite for a tac cap setup. I like the idea of tac caps because:
1. smaller profile, as a target
2. smaller profile, for looks
3. limited ammo feels more realistic and will make me play differently (for better or for worse)
4. limited ammo is lighter, quieter, etc

I don't particularly want to buy a cyclone yet (and frankly I don't know much about them yet either), so I'm trying to run off Syclops' original Ghetto build (reposted by David here), but using a cheap gravity hopper to mate a paint pod onto the marker. See images

It mightn't be obvious because the red cut line obscured the hopper a bit, but I'm trying to exploit the curved bottom of the hopper to assist feeding the balls in to the feed-neck as normal, and the pod creates a 30-50 round game 'clip'.

Has any body tried this, seen this, or otherwise have any advice regarding this mod?

Also, what's your opinion/advice on the fitment - if I can't make an almost seamless joint, would it be better if the slightly smaller hopper-piece fits inside the pod-piece tube, or if the pod-piece tube butts up against the slightly larger hopper-piece?

ok first off, the cyclone is great
it uses the excess gas from your shot to reload the second shot
plus you have the options of the A5 cyclone hopper (the blimp), the x7 low pro
hopper (the shoe) or the tac cap/stove top (off set with tac cap)
or any home made creation like the H-mags or mag pods

your ideal is solid, but the problems I see: 1) hopper bottom not flat 2)tac cap base is quite wide to fit in the cyclone 3). make sure to look at your profile, you do not want this to sit higher then it needs to.

here is a Gif of the Cyclone working.

To be honest with you I think a cyclone is a great investment. As Arson said it uses excess air to feed only 1 ball at a time so it lessens the likelihood of chops. I have mine with a slightly softer paddle and since I got it, I have not had a single chop, in any type of weather.

I do like your idea, bit I see the same problems that Arson listed, with your setup I think it will be high and real close to the center of your marker, where the cyclone will be offset more.
But remember these are our opinions, don't let us stop you from trying it, we may be wrong and it work out great for you too

if your looking for tac cap advantages without the cyclone, might think about this: http://www.rap4.com/store/paintball/p/008347/tactical-50-rounds-hopper

smaller profile (at least from the front) than a traditional hopper, limited ammo, a lot cheaper than a cyclone, and less work than trying to marry a pod to a hopper feedneck.

Of course, I'm lazy, so that last one is important to me.

Edit: $4 less from zephyr: http://www.zephyrpaintball.com/product/APP-2020-TAC-50-HPR/Allen-Paintball-Products-Tactical-50-Round-Hopper---Black.html

Thanks BF, that's really neat. Effectively disguises the hopper as a scope - the one thing that gives away that it's a paintball gun, now looks less obvious. I like it a lot, thanks for the info!

I'll probably be purchasing a new mask soon online, so to add a cheapo hopper and pod will be negligible cost, and building it could (hopefully) be a bit of fun.

I'll keep the forum updated.

GR4 - I have one of those "Scope hoppers"  you will find your self shaking it to get the PBs to drop...its not that great for feeding the balls into the breach.

I'm with the rest of the guys on this...the cyclone is the only way to go!
